Trust in the Lord and do good;
dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him and he will do this:
He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn,
your vindication like the noonday sun.
Be still before the Lord
and wait patiently for him;
do not fret when people succeed in their ways,
when they carry out their wicked schemes.
— Psalm 37:3-7 NIV
Sometimes waiting makes us feel powerless. When nothing happens, God begins to seem distant. Pretty soon, hope is lost.
We trust, but see no resolve. We reconsider if we actually made the best choice. Then we begin wondering what it means to "delight."
Have we genuinely committed? Were we still enough? How patient is patient?
Instead of believing that God hears our prayers and is working on the answer, we take matters back into our own hands. We make the answer we want fit our definitions. Sadly, that leads to controlling things we don't understand and opening the door to disaster.
But this Psalm offers another rhythm:
- Trust.
- Do good.
- Stay present.
- Wait.
There are things you can do today. And there are things you cannot control today, tomorrow, or next year. Wisdom means learning the difference.
